Sue's Anti-Viral Spray, The Natural Alternative to Hand Sanitizer

ANTIVIRAL+LABEL.jpg

We are living in difficult times. Navigating a global pandemic of the Corona Virus has led to world wide shut downs of schools, universities, public events and venues, museums, theaters including all of Broadway, sports arenas and even many cities and countries. Interruptions to everyday life due to this pandemic is altering the way we see the world and how we live. People go into panic mode (pan meaning widespread as in pandemic, panic, pandemonium)-sudden mass terror ensues.

Uncertain of how to react, people first run to the familiar, hoarding things like hand sanitizer, and stores respond by charging $80 a bottle for something that typically costs about $4.99. For years I’ve been speaking about the dangers of using chemicals found in products such as hand sanitizer and attempting to educate folks on the need to switch from toxic products to natural alternatives and now seems as good a time as any to remind everyone that there are safe and effective ways to protect ourselves from viruses, bacteria and fungal infections without resorting to toxic chemical concoctions. For me the answer always comes from nature, and I turn to plant-based remedies for solutions and alternatives to commercial products.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to the effective treatment of an ever‐increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, fungi and viruses. Essential oils possess antioxidant, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antifungal, and antiviral properties. So why not turn to these powerful essential oils to help mitigate viruses? Antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial essential oils help to keep harmful microbes away.

Sue’s Anti-Viral Spray

Let’s explore a few of my favorite essential oils chosen as ingredients for my newest product, Sue’s Anti-Viral Spray.
The Oils

Oregano Oil: The essential oil of Oregano has been used since ancient times for medicinal purposes. Oregano oil is  anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic. It is a powerful additition to Sue’s Anti-Viral Spray. It is a powerful antiseptic and natural cleaning agent due to its disinfectant qualities. Derived from the Origanum Compactum plant, oregano oil has a strong, spicy, tangy aroma. I chose oregano oil for its antiseptic, disinfecting, and immune-boosting qualities.

Tea Tree oil: Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is among the most potent antimicrobial essential oils found to fight bacteria, viruses and fungi. It inhibits bacteria and helps to fight infections. Tea tree essential oil inhibits influenza during the early stages by preventing intracellular processing of the viral particle. Tea Tree Essential Oil is a powerful, antiseptic. It works as an immune system stimulant and is highly beneficial for eliminating bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The main constituents of Tea Tree Oil are: α-pinene, β-pinene, Sabinene, Myrcene, α-Phellandrene, α-Terpinene, Limonene, 1,8-cineole, gamma-Terpinene, p-Cymene, Terpinolene, Linalool, Terpinen-4-ol and α-Terpineol. Tea Tree oil is an excellant addition to Sue’s Anti-Viral Spray thanks to its non-toxic, antiseptic qualities.

Lemongrass oil: Lemongrass has potent antidepressant, antioxidant, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, fungicidal, nervine and sedative properties. The main chemical constituents of Lemongrass Oil are: Myrcene, Citral, Citronellal, Geranyl Acetate, Nerol, Geraniol, and Limonene. These terpenes have known benefits of being antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial. Used topically Lemongrass Oil can eliminate or inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria due to its Citral content, which is known to have anti-microbial properties. With its fresh, citrusy scent Lemongrass oil is refreshing and uplifting and gives Sue’s Anti-Viral Spray a wonderfully aromatic quality.

Rosemary oil: Rosemary is an another potent aromatic oil with a citrus-like, wonderful herbaceous scent. Known for its numerous healing benefits, Rosemary is beneficial for its antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic qualities.

The important thing to remember is to keep your immune system strong. This is crucial. Herbs and essential oils are our allies .
Chemicals are unnecessary, especially when there are natural alternatives widely available .

What is in hand sanitizers?

1- Alcohol

Hand sanitizers are mostly made of 60-70% ethyl and/or isoproply alcohol which dehdydrates the skin and can actually break down your skin’s natural defenses, resulting in a rise in skin pH that leaves your skin more vulnerable. While alcohol-based hand sanitizers may help check the spread of germs and provide a defense against infection and disease, there are many reasons why they may not always be the best hygiene solution. Alcohol can cause dryness and cracks in the skin.leaving the skin unable to heal well. That's why it's especially important not to use alcohol-based sanitizers on injured skin. This can actually break down your skin’s natural defenses, leaving your skin more vulnerable. If you suffer from cracked, dry skin please remember to use Sue’s Salves to heal damaged skin.

Sue’s Salves helps to keep your skin protected and when applied offers a natural barrier protection against germs while also helping to heal the skin back together.

Triclosan
Triclosan
is a common ingredient in many anti-bacterial products. According to Skin Deep and The Environmental Working Group (EWG) Triclosan may lead to hormonal disruptions and cause bacteria to adapt to its antimicrobial properties, which creates more antibiotic-resistant strains. Triclosan can also harm the immune system, which protects your body against disease. It is one of many products not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It is a persistent chemical, bioaccumulative in wildlife. Think of where the chemicals go when you shower, wash, swim instreams, rivers, oceans. These chemicals go into the water supply and can affect fish and wildlife.

Synthetic fragrances
If your hand sanitizer is scented, then it's likely loaded with toxic chemicals such as synthetic  fragrances.  These are derived from petrochemicals (petroleum-based), and harmful to human health. in man-made fragrances include phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, and benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and toluene, which are known carcinogens. Synthetic fragrances contain phthalates, endocrine disrupters that mimic hormones and could alter genital development. Phthalates are in hundreds of products you use every day. They are the chemicals that make plastic soft and flexible.

Parabens
Parabens
are used to preserve other ingredients and extend a product's shelf life. Applying these chemicals to your skin, as you do when you use ANY commercial skin care product exposes you to chemicals that are estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function. I 'say that these products will be on the shelves long after were dead and gone because they are meant to give products an almost unlimited shelf life. So hand sanitizers will out live you if you are repeatedly putting them on your skin.

Here at Sue’s Salves we encourage you to know what is in your skin care products.

  • Look on the label for the following ingredients to avoid: methylparaben, propylparaben, isoparaben, and butylparaben. Avoid phthalates, fragrance oils, triclosan, and the multitude of other chemical ingredients commonly found in commercial products. Remember that these products are not regulated by the FDA.

Sue’s Salves is here to help. We craft 100% plant-based herbal skin care products with plants grown in Sue’s organic medicine garden. We use the highest quality essential oils. We never use preservatives or toxic ingredients.

    Final thoughts:
Take care of yourself and others.

KEEP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG. This will have a profound effect on whether you contract Corona virus and any other sickness/disease. You can do this by eating a clean diet and taking extra vitamin C, D and zinc. Eat lots of leafy greens and fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat organic whenever possible. Nutrition is key to health.
Sue’s Salves is like nutrition from the outside in.
